Is it Smarter to Lose Weight or Lose Fat?

If you’re thinking about joining a new gym or fitness program in La Vista, there’s a good chance that one of your highest priorities is to lose weight. But what does losing weight really entail? Is there a difference between losing weight and losing fat?

Weight loss isn’t the same as fat loss. It’s essential to understand the two to help you meet your goals. And maintain them.

Weight Loss

Your body’s full weight involves bones, organs, muscles, fat and water. Losing weight could lead to a smaller number on the scale, but weight loss doesn’t always mean you’re healthy. If you’re losing weight from your muscles, you won’t achieve the effect you’re seeking. And it’s not feasible for a long time.

Why? Muscles are our fat-burning machines. Muscle density influences your metabolic rate, or how many calories your body burns. The less muscle your frame has, the fewer calories your body will use.

Less muscle tissue also leads to reduced absorption of nutrients. When your body can’t appropriately pull in the nutrients it requires, it holds on to your food as fat deposits, instead of using the food like fuel. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body can use. This is true when you’re resting.

When you lose weight, you also get rid of water. Your muscles are 70% H2O and dropping under that composition brings on dehydration and muscle loss. Eventually, it can lead to muscle atrophy, which further decreases your metabolic rate.

Fat Loss

The most precise method of analyzing your body makeup is body fat percentage. Imagine two people. Both are the same height and weight, but one has a lower body fat percentage.

While both individuals have the same weight on the scale, their internal body fat composition is different. The person with less body fat will typically be stronger due to the fact they have a larger amount of muscle. Consequently, they’ll need a smaller shirt and pant size because they have a smaller amount of fat.

So, what’s the best method to lose weight? By using strength training to enhance muscle while also burning fat. We advise choosing a fitness program that you like. HIIT, also known as high intensity interval training, is scientifically proven to melt fat and boost your metabolic rate.

Whichever workout program you follow, it’s important to fuel with a balanced diet and proper hydration.
